In 1967 I received my first 35mm SLR camera, a Pentax with a 55mm lens. What better setting than a worlds fair, Expo67 as a backdrop to my introduction to photography. My hobby turned into a profession and several years later I was using large format cameras, processing and printing black and white, creating audio visual productions. As the audio visual market grew, so did the equipment. I had the pleasure of using 35mm optical printers.

Optical printers were used in the motion picture industry to create visual effects in a variety of ways. I used optical printers to support the audio visual market, providing animated sequences, stop motion sequences, in-camera matts, panoramic reveals. I applied optical printing techniques to large format photography, creating visual effects for the print /magazine and billboard markets.

To add additional features to visual effects I included motion control. Creating a prototype motion control compound using 3 axis. An early version of CNC, it provides programmed movements in 3 directions: N/S E/W and rotational.

Today, I continue my work in visual effects with motion control and I am pleased to be able to offer a sample of my photographic images. Working with large format B&W films and colour film transparencies, (E6 and C41) I continue to develop new ways to illustrate my analogue work in the digital era.

1970

I began my career in photography in 1970, working 5 years as a medical photographer. During this time I acquired formal training in : darkroom processes, B&W automated film processing, B&W printing and the use of large format cameras, and creating audio visual productions as well as producing photographs for use in medical publications and exhibit and display panels.

1975

I was employed by a multi media company to assist in the production of audio visual presentations using special optical effects. I was using a 35mm Marron Carrell 1400 optical printer. I also continued creating photographic support materials for business and marketing presentations.

1980

I created a multi media company serving the print, audio visual /video markets. I also developed a 3 axis motion control system that supported 35mm and large format SFX special effects photography. We also provided graphic art direction and special effects photographic services for several print medias: Billboard and magazine ad campaigns. We also worked with several advertising agencies, graphic designers, art directors and illustrators. The optical effects created were done using a variety of analogue methods such as wet processes (contact printing), masking, soft edge, or motion control samples.

1990

Working in a Custom Photo Lab I created 8x10 film samples in the photocomposition department, creating film samples for exhibit and display panels, showroom displays, out door signage and promotional backlit displays.

1995

I was working as technical support for a pharmaceutical software company, providing phone and onsite support with software installations and troubleshooting hardware and software.

2000 - 2015

I continued with tech support, working for the ministry of Education, providing help to students with physical and/or mental disabilities. As a member of the tech support team I travelled throughout the lower mainland of Vancouver.

2015

Continue to create new visual photographic effects, develop motion control with hybrid digital photography.
